The Nutcracker, Our tradition

Two standing ovations for two amazing performances!! Bravo Fleet-Wood Dance Company

Fleet-Wood Dancentre, School of Dance opened in 1994 The oldest School of Dance in the area, and continuing to offer the best training in the Georgian Triangle.  Highly trained professional staff offer classes in Cecchetti Ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, tap, acro, competitions, ballet exams and yearly recital.

Whether your child wants to just dance for fun once or week, or train with serious intentions to a professional goal, we have the classes for you.  In September of 2015 Camille Paget was accepted by audition  to Canada's Quinte Ballet School for Professional Training.  We are very proud of Camille's accomplishment.

We are also very proud of our "family friendly feel" at Fleet-Wood Dancentre as shown in our happy students.  A live video feed allows parents to watch classes from our reception and Art Gallery within 65 Simcoe Street.

THE NUTCRACKER:   TRADITION!  December 17, 2017  Meaford Hall

Fleet-Wood is proud to present The Nutcracker every two years with students of the Fleet-Wood Dance Company and professional staff and alumni.  Meaford hall showcased two sold out performances ending with standing ovations.   Dancers from five years to adult showed off four months of hard work.

Dancers launched the production by performing at six local schools before hundreds of children who also got to join in making sound affects.  Some boys got to try their best marching!!

Teda Froentejis first performed  The Nutcracker at the age of 7, but on the 12th of December she took the stage as The Sugar Plum Fairy at 17.    Many Fleet-Wood students have enjoyed this "right of passage"  and enjoy dancing all the different roles through their years at Fleet-Wood.

Every year dancers enjoy performing mini ballets in the store front windows of Historic Downtown Collingwood. Dressed in the beautiful costumes of The Nutcracker, dancers perform in decorated Christmas Windows, and when the snow is also falling, there is nothing more magical!!

Dance Programs

Fleet-Wood Dancentre is nestled in the heart of 65 Simcoe Street, next to The Library.  Internal hallways provide parents easy access to the delectibles at "Creemore Coffee Shoppe" or enjoy exploring the Art Gallery, The Food Co-op, and The Wool Shoppe.   Spacious washrooms and Press Gallery complete with tables and chairs provide a comfortable waiting area where you can enjoy watching the class from a live video feed!

Fleet-Wood Dancentre is the only studio that offers direct video feed of the class.  We feel it is important that you be able to enjoy watching your child's progress throughout the year,  as they take their first steps into the dance world.  A video feed is located in our reception with viewing available to the Art Gallery.   Our french doors also give your child a chance to wave and feel safe, seeing mom or dad right there!  **

Older children are capable of more.  Pointed toes are practiced "at the barre" and "retires" are carefully placed at the knee.    Allegro steps common to both ballet and jazz are introduced from the corner.  Dancers will learn to skip and gallop in patterns finishing with a pose in the corner.    Class ends with "reverence", the bow from teacher to student to teacher, saying "thank-you and good-bye".

This acclaimed grouping of students is most well known for their annual performances at Christmas, performing in the windows of Downtown Collingwood's Hurontario Street.    As well they tour local schools bringing portions of The Nutcracker to children who would not otherwise have a chance to see live ballet performances. Fleet-Wood Dancentre is the first School of Dance hired to perform professinally at  Meaford Hall and recently presented "The Nutcracker", Dec. 17, 2017.  Fleet-Wood is the only School of Dance that takes on the enormous task of preparing their students for such a large ballet production.    Students ages 5 to 19, along with professional alumni and staff present a dynamic two hour performance.     Fleet-Wood Dancentre initially received grants from The Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts and the Kemp Award, with which to purchase the elaborate sets and costumes.    Fleet-Wood students look forward to learning a new role each time, from Chinese, to Arabian to Waltz of the Flowers and more!

The Fleet-Wood Dance Company students study the Cecchetti Method of Ballet and can participate in exams as early as 7 years of age.    In addition to being grounded in ballet, they also receive training in pointe, modern, jazz, tap, hip hop, acro and contemporary so that are well rounded and prepared for auditions at the post-secondary level.   Fleet-Wood students have gone on to graduate from Canada's National Ballet School, Ryerson, York University, George Brown College and Toronto Dance Theatre.  Many now perform professionally.

* Competition Classes

Students in the Competition Stream compete at "Luv to Dance" and "Dance Canada" Competitions at Blue Mountain.   Solos, duets and group dances are available.  Colin Eccles, Jonathan Fleet and Sierra Maraj head the competition program with summertime spent on duets and solos.   Competition students also study the Cecchetti Method of Ballet, three classes a week in addition to their choice of competition classes.

The National Ballet School of Canada.

Fleet-Wood students study The Cecchetti Method of Ballet.  Yearly trips to "Cecchetti Day" at The National Ballet School give students the opportunity to have class with the schools' staff and Cecchetti Examiners.  An opportunity to feel a part of the Cecchetti Community and enjoy dancing in one of the world's most premiere dance studios to the accompaniament of exceptional musicians playing grand pianos.    Fleet-Wood is proud to have trained several students who were accepted through an audition process and are now training at The National Ballet School.
